Awesome Ikea Hack of the Week: Cute graphic coasters on the cheap

Channel the 1980s – the good parts of the decade, at least – with your Toronto apartment decor. Today’s Ikea hack is beautifully cheap and has some retro funk to it, to brighten up your pad with colourful accents. Not only is this hack super budget-friendly, it’s also so easy, Steve Harvey could probably get it right.

In the mid-80s, the Memphis Group, a designer collective founded by an Italian guy, started putting out furniture, glass and homewares decorated with crazy geometric patterns.

Check out this Ikea hack for Memphis Group-inspired cork coasters.

  1. The parts. You’ll need
  • Avskild cork coasters – $2.00/4 pack
  • Acrylic paints in mint, ice blue, pink, black and white, from your local arts and crafts store
  • Paintbrushes
  • Tape, such as narrow painter’s tape

  1. Do it. Tape off sections of each coaster. Check the picture for inspiration. You’re going to paint parts of the coaster that aren’t taped, so the taped areas will expose the natural cork of the Avskild coasters.

Paint the untaped sections in a single colour for each area. Give them 3-4 coats for even coverage and solid colour. Let the paint dry, then gently pull of the tape. Display on your coffee table, dining room table, or wherever!

So she escaped, living in Europe and Australia, white-knuckling it through plates of calf brains and raw horse meat, and learning languages she can't remember anymore.
