Awesome Ikea Hack of the Week: Retro black & gold nightstand

There are some truly ugly items at Ikea. Take the Rast dresser, which is about as plain as they come. Unfinished wood, boring drawers, square sides and dull knobs. Not much to look at.

But this week’s Ikea hack uses the homely Rast dresser and transforms it into a sexy black and gold nightstand, thanks to the genius of Marcus Design. Here’s how to make it happen:

  1. The parts. You’ll need
  • Rast dresser x1 or x2 – $39.99 http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/75305709/
  • Primer (paint)
  • Black lacquer spray paint  – several cans
  • Gold acrylic paint
  • Clear lacquer
  • Pre-cut stencil to apply to the front of the drawers
  • Fancy new gold drawer pulls
  1. Do it.
Assemble the body of the dresser, then prime and paint it black. Paint the drawer parts as well. Attach the stencil securely to the front of the drawer and paint it with the gold acrylic paint. It might need a few coats in order to look perfect. When the drawers are completely dry (probably the next day), attach your new drawer pulls and assemble the drawers before putting them into the assembled nightstand.

Enjoy!
