Top 8 Places to Take Spectacular Photos of Toronto Winter

Sure it’s cold, but winter can be really beautiful, too. Whether you’re looking to take photos for fun, to fill your Instagram feed and impress the world, for winter weddings, or for any other reason, Toronto has some amazing scenery worth capturing during the snowy months. Nature and urban scenes, Toronto has it all. Grab your camera or your phone and hit up these top 8 places to take spectacular photos of the Toronto winter

  1. Grenadier Pond, High Park
All of High Park is rewarding for pictures at any time of year. But, if you can bear to wake up early to catch the morning light after a snow storm, the pond will not disappoint. It feels like being transported north to Muskoka. Absolutely stunning.
  2. Lake Ontario
This is an obvious one, but what could be more Canadian than capturing the cityscape in winter? Or maybe, you would rather take stormy photos of the lake itself? There are a number of options when it comes to location. You can take pictures along the boardwalk either at the Beaches or all the way at Humber; from the ferry going to the Toronto Islands; the choices are endless.
  3. Casa Loma
Winter and a castle? Could you ask for more of a fairy tale combo? In Toronto, we aren’t necessarily blessed with the incredibly romantic architectural scenery of, say, Europe, but at least Casa Loma gives you a taste.
  4. University of Toronto, St. George Campus
Continuing along the theme of romantic scenery, do yourself a favour and go to the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus. If you’re having a winter wedding in the city, this is the place to take your photos. Trinity, Knox and University College will provide the most beautiful photographs, complete with buttresses, gargoyles, stained glass and courtyards surrounded by stone vaulted arcades.
  5. Nathan Philips Square
If you’re downtown, doing some holiday shopping or looking at the latest holiday window displays at the Bay, make a stop over at Nathan Philips Square. It’s the perfect place to have some hot chocolate and take some skating selfies.
  6. Yonge-Dundas Square
If metropolitan winter scenery is what you’re after, this is the place. Bright lights, bustling streets, decorations and huge advertisements make Yonge-Dundas Square the perfect setting for the most colourful photographs. For a statement photo, come to the square at night for the ultimate colour contrast.
  7. The Distillery District
This hood is just plain wonderful during the winter season. It’s picturesque, historic and has a look unlike any other spot in Toronto. The holiday market is a treat for your camera lens and the festive decorations are undeniably beautiful. All around, it’s a wonderful environment for amateur photogs and for the professionals.
  8. Toronto Islands
Not that we necessarily want another ice storm, but hey, if it happens, get to the islands and take some spectacular winter wonderland shots. Use monochromatic tones for an artistic touch.

Erin Cardone: Born on the Prairies, Erin Cardone grew up knowing there was more to life than canola fields and AAA Alberta Angus. So she escaped, living in Europe and Australia, white-knuckling it through plates of calf brains and raw horse meat, and learning languages she can't remember anymore. After a stint as a jaded, skeptical journalist, she changed tack and began writing rather awesome blogs and showing businesses that advertising is dead, so long live social media, with her businesses Legendary Social Media. She now splits her time between various Canadian cities, Costa Rica and wherever else the wind blows.
