Why should I move to Toronto?

For us Torontonians, hearing someone ask this question is a clear sign that the asker has never been to Toronto.

But if you encounter someone who needs an answer to the question, or just to make yourself feel better about living in TO, we put together this list of 20 reasons why you should move to Toronto.

  1. It’s super multicultural. Being white is barely the majority anymore and we love it that way. TO’s got people from pretty much every country on earth.
  2. It’s very safe. One of the safest in the world, in fact.
  3. There are about a zillion bars and restaurants to suit everyone.
  4. The food situation is fantastic. You can literally find anything you want to eat in TO. Check out our Flavours of Toronto series.
  5. Eating out is pretty reasonable. Most restaurants do a meal for about $12.
  6. Brunch is an institution. You’ll see – the lineups are ridiculous on the weekends, but it’s always worth it.
  7. The public transit is pretty decent. You can pretty much get from anywhere to anywhere, although the actual quality of Toronto’s public transit system is hotly debated.
  8. There’s always something to do. There’s some awesome activity, performance or festival to see every day of the week.
  9. We have beaches. Lots of them. And they’re really nice.
  10. The summers are great. Seriously, our summer weather’s pretty much perfect.
  11. It has some really awesome neighbourhoods. The Distillery District is full of galleries and pretentious cafes that make a mean latte; Cabbagetown’s a yuppie paradise; Leslieville is full of hipsters; Yorkville is like Hollywood north.
  12. Drake is from here.
  13. We have the best market in the world. Honest – St. Lawrence Market was named the best in the world in 2012 by National Geographic.
  14. We have six Chinatowns. Hello, dim sum!
  15. Toronto plays New York and other major cities in LOTS of movies.
  16. It’s the centre of the universe. Just ask us.
  17. Downtown TO is awesome, 24-7. During the day, it bustles with business, the nightlife is alive and well, and tons of people live downtown, so that helps too.
  18. Caribana festival. It’s amazing.
  19. You’re close to everything. Lake country, New York, Niagara Falls, Montreal – it’s all in our back yard.
  20. You’re going to find your clique here. TO is full of people who came from elsewhere and have made their home in our city. You will too, and you’ll love it, just like us!

So she escaped, living in Europe and Australia, white-knuckling it through plates of calf brains and raw horse meat, and learning languages she can't remember anymore. After a stint as a jaded, skeptical journalist, she changed tack and began writing rather awesome blogs and showing businesses that advertising is dead, so long live social media, with her businesses Legendary Social Media. She now splits her time between various Canadian cities, Costa Rica and wherever else the wind blows.
