8 reasons why apartment hunting is just like Tinder dating

Sure, renting in Toronto can be a bit of a nightmare. There’s the obscene prices, the limited selection, the massive competition we face for the best rentals and the fact that just when we think we’ve found “the one,” it gets snapped up before we have time to schedule a viewing.

In those ways, renting in Toronto is kind of like Tinder dates. We have to sift through the undesirable options, we come across a lot of options that just don’t look like they did in the pictures, and the good ones are already taken.

Let’s face it. Renting an apartment pretty much Tinder dating and here are 8 reasons why:

8. The pictures don’t tell the whole story.

Like girls posting selfies (read: pics of their cleavage), some listings have photos that show all the great features of an apartment. But when you show up for the date/viewing, you discover that photos can be deceiving and a “renovation” might be in order.

7. She’s looking for a long-term commitment, but you’re not.

It can get awkward. Negotiations ensue. You end up getting stuck with a one-year relationship despite a series of imperfections.

6. The carpet doesn’t match the drapes.

It’s time to bring in your friend with a penchant for interior decorating.

5. The location isn’t quite right.

You’re near Little Italy, she’s in Scarborough. That just ain’t gonna work.

4. You’re not sure her friends will mix with yours.

She’s a party girl living in the Fashion District, but you’re a little more North Toronto. From the pictures, you’re not sure a date is worth it. At least when it comes to apartment hunting, Toronto Rentals’ neighbourhood guides will help you determine whether your lifestyle fits with the apartment you’re scoping out.

3. The first date/viewing is always awkward.

You get a decent feel for your date, but you want to know more. You ask to spend the night, but apparently that’s not cool.

2. She’s high maintenance.

She’s gorgeous and in just the right location. But you can tell from her Louboutins and Louis bag that you’re not going to be able to afford this relationship. Your search continues.

1. The listings aren’t fresh.

You’re scrolling through and you find an absolute babe. Everything looks perfect, so you send a message and… no answer. The listing’s off the market. You become inconsolable. Luckily, that’s not a problem with Toronto Rentals, because we only post the freshest Toronto rental listings and update them continuously.
