Awesome Ikea Hack of the Week: Simple floating credenza

Storage is always a huge struggle for apartment-dwellers, and even adding shelving units might not be a possibility for those of us who live in tiny spaces (to offset the crazy cost of rent in Toronto).

Luckily we found a simple DIY Ikea hack to create a floating credenza with great storage potential – on the top you can display photos or collectibles and inside, put whatever you want. Just make sure you don’t store anything too heavy.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. The parts. You’ll need

Besta shelving unit with doors, high gloss white – $205.00

Besta suspension rails x2 – $10 each

A wooden panel, of nice material, cut to 3/4″ x 47 3/4″ x 16″

Wood stain and/or laquer or polyurethane finish

Sandpaper

Contact cement glue

Paintbrush or foam brush

  1. Do it. Build the Besta unit, but leave the doors and interior shelves off. Now measure and mark on your wall where the suspension rails should be located and hang them according to the instructions. Now install the shelving unit to the wall.

Sand the wood panel and round the corners and edges slightly, then stain it. When it dries, laquer or poly the wood, and let dry again.

When the wood is dry, use the paintbrush or a foam brush to apply the contact cement to the top of the credenza. When the glue dries, put the interior shelves back in and hang the doors, and you’re good to go!
