Awesome Ikea Hack of the Week: 3 absurdly easy hacks for rustic decor

There’s something about rustic decor that makes a place feel so homey. Since you’re renting, it can be hard to infuse your own personal touch and create that homey feel without making serious changes to your apartment or house that your landlord may or may not love.

Today’s Ikea Hack includes three really easy ways to bring the rustic, Anthropologie or Restoration Hardware feel into your rental in non-permanent ways that you can take with you when you go:

  1. Twine-wrapped hardware. Source: I Love That Junk

You’ll need:

How to do it:

Apply glue to the “pull” part of the handle where you’ll want the twine. Attach the end of the twine to one end of the “pull” section, then wrap it carefully until you get to the top. Stop there or go for another layer of twine after adding more glue. Secure the other end of the twine with more glue. So ridiculously easy.

  1. Nautical lamp. Source: Amy Allender

You’ll need:

  • Any really basic lamp base and shade
  • Manila rope
  • Glue or hot glue

How to do it:

Use the glue to attach one end of the rope to the bottom of the base of the lamp, then wrap the entire base carefully and tightly with the rope. Attach the other end at the top of the base using glue again. Seriously, that is it.

  1. Twig tealight holders. Source: Pinterest

You’ll need:

How to do it:

Probably doesn’t require much explanation, but basically attach the twigs as closely as you can around the candle holders using the glue. If you’re worried about fire safety, opt for an LED tealight inside the holder.

Born on the Prairies, Erin Cardone grew up knowing there was more to life than canola fields and AAA Alberta Angus. So she escaped, living in Europe and Australia, white-knuckling it through plates of calf brains and raw horse meat, and learning languages she can't remember anymore. After a stint as a jaded, skeptical journalist, she changed tack and began writing rather awesome blogs and showing businesses that advertising is dead, so long live social media, with her businesses Legendary Social Media. She now splits her time between various Canadian cities, Costa Rica and wherever else the wind blows.
