Awesome Ikea Hack of the Week: Marbled, textured side table or coffee table

Those Lack side tables and coffee tables are such an awesome bargain that it’s pretty much impossible not to pass them up; but the problem is they’re rather plain looking.  With a few extra dollars, you can definitely spruce up your living room using what would otherwise be pretty lacklustre furniture and a couple of additional accessories in order to transform your space.

For today’s Ikea hack, you can create a marble-looking variation of the Lack side table or coffee table, or cover it in one of dozens of unique patterns and textures using the links we’ve provided.

Let’s get started!

  1. The parts. You’ll need

  1. Do it.

Get out your Modge-Podge and the paper. Spread out the paper on a sheet, some plastic or newspaper, and totally cover it on both sides with the glue. When the glue dries, it hardens and makes for a good surface for the side table, so be pretty generous.

Lay the paper over the table top, or cover the whole thing. Use a flat tool like a knife, ruler or old credit card to push out the bubbles for a smooth surface.

When the table dries, cover the top and sides with several layers of a clear lacquer, letting the lacquer dry between layers, so that the paper won’t rip if the table is bumped or gets wet.

That’s it!

Born on the Prairies, Erin Cardone grew up knowing there was more to life than canola fields and AAA Alberta Angus. So she escaped, living in Europe and Australia, white-knuckling it through plates of calf brains and raw horse meat, and learning languages she can't remember anymore. After a stint as a jaded, skeptical journalist, she changed tack and began writing rather awesome blogs and showing businesses that advertising is dead, so long live social media, with her businesses Legendary Social Media. She now splits her time between various Canadian cities, Costa Rica and wherever else the wind blows.
